Sun, sand and sea along the Gulf of Thailand
Hua Hin's Beaches
Hua Hin's coastline stretches for kilometres along the Gulf of Thailand, offering a variety of beach experiences from the lively main beach in town to secluded stretches further south. The waters are generally calm, making them suitable for swimming most of the year, though the monsoon season (September to November) can bring rougher conditions. The best beach weather is from November through April when skies are clear and humidity is lower.
Hua Hin Beach
The main Hua Hin Beach runs for about 5 kilometres from the Hilton hotel in the north down to Khao Takiab in the south. The northern end near the town centre is the most developed, with beach chairs, umbrellas, and vendors selling food and drinks. Horse riding along the shore is a Hua Hin tradition that dates back decades. The sand is firm and wide, perfect for long walks especially around sunrise and sunset. The central section near Soi 67-77 tends to be quieter and is popular with joggers and families.
Khao Takiab Beach
Khao Takiab Beach (also called Chopstick Hill Beach) sits at the southern end of the main stretch, beneath the temple-topped hill with its giant standing Buddha statue. This area has a more local feel compared to the main beach, with seafood restaurants lining the road and fishing boats dotting the shore. The beach here is wide and relatively uncrowded on weekdays. The hill itself is worth climbing for panoramic views of the entire coastline, though watch out for the resident monkeys who can be bold about grabbing food and belongings.
Suan Son Pradipat
Suan Son Pradipat is a beautiful pine-fringed beach about 5 kilometres north of Hua Hin town, managed by the Thai military. It has a small entrance fee but rewards visitors with a clean, shaded beach that rarely feels crowded. The pine trees (suan son means pine garden) provide natural shade, and the atmosphere is peaceful and family-friendly. There are basic food stalls and restrooms available. This beach is a favourite weekend escape for locals and long-term residents.
Pranburi Beach & Beyond
Heading about 30 kilometres south of Hua Hin, Pranburi Beach and the Pak Nam Pran area offer a completely different experience. The beaches here are quieter and backed by boutique resorts and stylish beach clubs. The Pranburi Forest Park has a mangrove boardwalk and a stunning stretch of empty beach. Further south, Sam Roi Yot National Park features dramatic limestone cliffs, hidden coves, and the famous Phraya Nakhon Cave with its iconic royal pavilion illuminated by sunlight streaming through the cave ceiling. These southern beaches are well worth a day trip from Hua Hin.
Secret Beaches
Between Khao Takiab and Pranburi, several smaller beaches are tucked between rocky headlands, accessible via narrow roads off the main highway. Khao Tao Beach and the adjacent Sai Noi Beach are local favourites - small, sheltered bays with calm water and a relaxed atmosphere. Hat Khao Tao has a small temple on the hill above and a freshwater reservoir nearby. These spots are best reached by car or motorbike and offer the kind of peaceful beach day that the main tourist beaches cannot match.
