Essential Hua Hin Guide
Everything you need to know about living in and visiting Hua Hin
Hua Hin is a seaside resort town on the Gulf of Thailand, about 200 km southwest of Bangkok. A favoured royal retreat since the 1920s, it offers a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere with all the amenities of a modern town. Here is everything you need to know.
About Hua Hin
Climate, currency, language and getting around
Climate & Best Time to Visit
Hua Hin enjoys a tropical climate with three loosely defined seasons. Notably, Hua Hin receives significantly less rainfall than destinations on the Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi) thanks to its position in a rain shadow. Year-round, expect abundant sunshine.
Cool Season
25–32°C, low humidity, virtually no rain. Peak tourist season — most pleasant time to visit.
Hot Season
Regularly exceeds 35°C with high humidity. Great for pool days and early mornings.
Rainy Season
Regular afternoon showers, occasional storms. Mornings often clear. Lower prices and fewer crowds.
Currency & Costs
The Thai currency is the Baht (THB). ATMs are widely available throughout Hua Hin, though most charge a 220 baht foreign transaction fee per withdrawal. Credit cards are accepted at malls, larger restaurants and hotels, but smaller shops and local eateries are typically cash-only. Currency exchange booths in town often offer better rates than banks or hotels.
Language
The official language is Thai. Many people in the tourism and service industries speak basic to good English, but learning a few Thai phrases goes a long way and is always appreciated.
Essential App
The LINE app is Thailand's primary messaging platform and is essential for communication with businesses, restaurants and service providers. Google Translate works reasonably well for Thai-English translation in a pinch.
Safety
Hua Hin is generally considered one of the safest towns in Thailand. Violent crime against visitors is extremely rare. The main safety considerations are road safety (traffic can be chaotic, especially scooters), sun protection (the tropical sun is much stronger than in Northern Europe), and water safety (rip currents can occur, especially during monsoon season). Petty theft is uncommon but use common sense with valuables.
Getting Around
The main ways to get around Hua Hin include renting a car or motorbike (most common for residents), using Grab (Thailand's equivalent of Uber), or taking local songthaews (shared pickup truck taxis) that run along the main road.
For getting to Hua Hin from Bangkok, options include driving (about 2.5–3 hours via motorway), taking a minivan from Victory Monument or Suvarnabhumi Airport (3 hours), the train from Hua Lamphong station (a scenic 4-hour journey), or flying to nearby Hua Hin Airport which has limited domestic routes.

Practical Services
Healthcare, banking, visas and essential services
Hospitals & Healthcare
Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin is the premier private hospital, located on Phetkasem Road. It offers international-standard care with English-speaking doctors, a 24-hour emergency department, and a wide range of specialist departments. Many doctors have trained internationally and the hospital accepts most international insurance plans. This is typically the first choice for expats and visitors.
San Paulo Hua Hin Hospital is another well-regarded private hospital with modern facilities and competitive pricing. Hua Hin Government Hospital provides public healthcare at very low cost, though wait times can be longer and English may be limited.
Dental & Eye Care
Several modern dental clinics offer high-quality treatment at a fraction of Western prices. Hua Hin Dental Clinic and Sea Smile Dental are popular with expats. Bangkok Hospital has an ophthalmology department plus several independent optical shops.
Pharmacies
Boots and Watsons are the major pharmacy chains found in BluPort and Market Village malls, stocking familiar international brands. Local independent pharmacies often have more knowledgeable pharmacists who can recommend treatments for common ailments. Many medications that require a prescription in Western countries are available over the counter in Thailand, though regulations are tightening. Most pharmacies are open 9am to 9pm or later.
Banking & Finance
All major Thai banks have branches in Hua Hin including Bangkok Bank, Kasikorn Bank (KBank), Siam Commercial Bank (SCB), and Krungthai Bank. Most have branches in BluPort and Market Village malls. Opening a Thai bank account is possible for foreigners with a valid visa and passport, though requirements vary by bank and branch.
Visa Information
Visa requirements depend on your nationality and intended length of stay. Common options:
Local Immigration
The Hua Hin Immigration Office handles extensions and 90-day reporting. Visa agents in town can assist with applications and extensions. For border runs, the nearest international borders are at Mae Sot (Myanmar) or Poi Pet (Cambodia).
