Thailand's surprising wine country

Monsoon Valley Vineyard

Just 45 kilometres west of Hua Hin, in the rolling hills near Nong Plub village, lies Thailand's most celebrated wine estate. Monsoon Valley Vineyard (also known as Hua Hin Hills Vineyard) is the flagship property of Siam Winery and has earned over 300 international awards for its wines. The vineyard is set against a stunning backdrop of limestone mountains and lush tropical greenery, making it a popular day trip for residents and visitors alike.

The Wines

Monsoon Valley produces a range of wines from grape varieties carefully selected for the tropical climate. The most popular include Colombard (a crisp, refreshing white), Shiraz (a medium-bodied red with soft tannins), and the signature Monsoon Valley Rosé which pairs beautifully with Thai cuisine. The estate also grows Chenin Blanc and the locally developed Malaga Blanc and Pokdum varieties. Thailand's unique two-harvest-per-year cycle allows the winemakers to experiment in ways not possible in traditional wine regions. The wines are available at many restaurants across Thailand and are exported internationally.

Vineyard Tours & Wine Tasting

The vineyard offers guided tours daily at 10:00 AM, 1:00 PM, and 3:00 PM. The standard tour includes a walk through the vineyards with an explanation of tropical viticulture, followed by a wine tasting session. Pricing starts at approximately 450 THB per person for the tour and tasting. For a more immersive experience, the Vineyard Jeep Tour (around 1,400 THB) takes you deeper into the estate on a scenic off-road route through the vines and surrounding hills. Booking ahead is recommended, especially during weekends and the peak season from November to February.

Sala Wine Bar & Bistro

The on-site Sala Wine Bar & Bistro is a destination in its own right. This beautiful open-air restaurant is set among the vines with views of the surrounding hills. The menu features Thai and international dishes designed to pair with Monsoon Valley wines, and the food is excellent regardless of your interest in wine. Wine flights are available so you can sample several varieties alongside your meal. The setting — particularly during the late afternoon golden hour — is one of the most picturesque dining experiences near Hua Hin.

Elephant Sanctuary

The vineyard grounds include an elephant sanctuary where visitors can observe and interact with elephants in an ethical, natural environment. The sanctuary focuses on the welfare of the animals and offers a more responsible alternative to traditional elephant tourism. This makes the vineyard especially appealing for families, as children can enjoy the elephants while adults explore the wines.

Getting There & Tips

The drive from Hua Hin takes about 45 minutes through scenic countryside, passing pineapple plantations and small villages. The route is straightforward and well-signposted. The best time to visit is during the cool season (November to February) when the weather is most pleasant for outdoor dining and exploration. The vineyard hosts special events throughout the year, including the popular Grape Harvest Festival. A visit can easily be combined with a stop at nearby Wat Huay Mongkol, one of the region's most impressive temples. Allow at least half a day for a relaxed visit with a tour, tasting, and lunch.
