Taxis, Grab & Songthaews
When to use which, and what you should be paying
You do not need a car in Hua Hin. Between apps, taxis and the local pickup buses, getting about is easy and cheap — as long as you know which one to use for what.
Grab
Book an airport transferThe ride-hailing app most people default to, and for good reason: the price is agreed in the app before you accept, so there is no negotiation and no misunderstanding. It shows you the driver and the route, you can pay by card, and it works in English.
Coverage in central Hua Hin is good. Further out into the residential areas it thins, and at busy times you may wait. Bolt also operates here and is worth having installed as a backup.
Taxis and private cars
Metered taxis are far less common here than in Bangkok. What you will mostly find are private cars and minivans working on an agreed price. That is fine — just agree the number before you get in, and agree whether it is per person or per car.
For an airport run, book in advance rather than improvising. It is a long drive and it is not the moment to be haggling at the kerb with luggage.
Songthaews
The converted pickups with two benches in the back, running fixed routes along the main roads for a handful of baht. Genuinely cheap, and the most local way to travel.
- Flag one down from the roadside, get in the back, sit down.
- Press the buzzer or tap the roof when you want to stop.
- Pay when you get out, at the driver's window.
- Have small notes — nobody wants to break a thousand.
They follow set routes, so they are excellent along the main drag and useless for getting to a specific villa.
Motorbike taxis
Quick, cheap, and everywhere. Agree the price first. Take the helmet if one is offered. Fine for short hops; a matter of personal judgement for anything longer or after dark.
Roughly what to expect. A songthaew along the main road is a few baht. A short Grab across town is modest. An airport transfer is a fixed, considerably larger figure — and worth booking rather than arranging on the day. If a quoted price sounds far off, it usually is; check the same journey in Grab for a sanity figure even if you do not book it.
Staying with us? We can arrange airport transfers, a car with a driver for a day, or a rental car delivered to the villa — just ask.
