Internet & SIM Cards
Getting online, and which SIM to buy
Thailand has genuinely good, genuinely cheap mobile data — usually better than what people arrive from. Getting connected is one of the easiest parts of settling in.
SIM cards
The two networks you will hear about are AIS and True (which absorbed dtac), with NT as a smaller third. Coverage across Hua Hin and the surrounding area is good on all of them; for the beaches and the hills further out, AIS has the edge more often than not.
- Arriving: tourist SIMs are sold at the airport and in every mall. Convenient, priced for convenience, and fine for a short stay.
- Staying: walk into any operator shop in town with your passport and get a normal prepaid SIM. Far better value than the tourist packs, and topping up is trivial through the app or any 7-Eleven.
- eSIM is widely supported if your phone takes one, and saves the shop visit entirely.
- Registration is mandatory — every Thai SIM is registered to a passport or ID. Bring the passport itself, not a photo of it.
A Thai number is worth having even on a long holiday. Banking apps, deliveries, restaurant bookings and Grab all assume you have one, and some will not work with a foreign number at all.
Internet at the villa
Fibre is widespread in the Hua Hin residential areas and cheap by most standards. Speeds advertised in the hundreds of megabits are normal, and for anything short of a household of heavy uploaders it is more than enough for video calls, streaming and working from home.
Two realities worth knowing:
- The Wi-Fi is usually the bottleneck, not the line. A single router at one end of a concrete-walled villa will not reach the far bedroom, no matter what you are paying for. A mesh unit or a second access point fixes what upgrading the package will not.
- Storms interrupt it. Usually briefly, occasionally for longer if something upstream is damaged. A mobile hotspot as a fallback saves the meeting.
If you are renting from us
Villas come with Wi-Fi already installed and the details are in the house guide. If it is slow or will not reach where you need it, tell us rather than living with it — it is usually a router placement problem we can solve the same day.
